How to Fix an Ingrown Toenail at Home (Non-Medical Care Tips)

Ingrown toenails are uncomfortable, frustrating, and sometimes downright painful—especially when the nail presses into the sidewall and creates that sharp, tender sting with every step. The good news? If the ingrown toenail is mild, you can safely and gently relieve the pressure at home using proper technique and the right tools.

As The Meticulous Manicurist, I’ve helped millions of people learn safe, effective toenail-care routines through my YouTube channel. This guide will walk you through a restorative, non-medical approach for reducing discomfort, lifting pressure, and keeping the area clean—without causing more irritation.

Important: These steps are for mild, cosmetic ingrowns. If you have severe redness, infection, significant swelling, drainage, or compromised circulation, stop and seek medical evaluation.

Before you begin, watch this real ingrown-toenail relief tutorial so you can see the exact angles, motions, and safe methods I recommend:

This video will help you understand the difference between lifting pressure and digging—a critical distinction for avoiding pain.

Step 1: Soak to Soften the Nail & Skin

A warm foot soak prepares the entire area by softening the skin and nail, which makes every step gentler and safer. Soak for 10–15 minutes in comfortably warm water. This allows the nail to flex more easily when you begin working on the sidewall.

Step 2: Use the Right Tools for Ingrown Toenail Relief

Most ingrown toenail pain comes from debris and pressure trapped in the nail groove. To relieve this safely, you need tools specifically designed for thick, curved, or compacted toenails.

The Deluxe Professional Ingrown Toenail Kit includes everything you need:

  • Toenail Nippers
  • Stainless Steel Nail File
  • Angled Cuticle Pusher (Left or Right-Handed Option)
  • Cuticle Remover (remove safety plug before use)
  • Ingrown Toenail Sidewall Cleaner
  • Ingrown Sidewall Rasp
  • Amber Bottle
  • Cuticle Oil
  • Mini Buffer Blocks (9 individual blocks)

Eligible for FSA and HSA reimbursement.

Step 3: Gently Lift and Release Pressure

After soaking, begin with the Ingrown Toenail Sidewall Cleaner. The goal is NOT to dig or scoop. You only want to:

  • Slide under just the tip of the nail edge
  • Gently lift compacted debris
  • Release pressure in tiny, controlled motions
  • Avoid breaking the skin at all times

This can bring immediate relief because the skin is no longer being pressed by the nail.

Step 4: Trim in Small, Controlled Cuts

Using the professional toenail nippers from your kit, trim the nail in tiny sections—never one big “chomp.” This prevents cracking and keeps the nail from tearing down into the corner.

Tips:

  • Start at the outer corner and work inward slowly
  • Stop if you feel resistance—reposition instead of forcing it
  • Don’t cut deep into the sidewall

Small cuts equal less pressure, less risk, and a much more comfortable experience.

Step 5: Smooth with the Stainless Steel File

Even after trimming, edges can feel sharp. The stainless steel file helps smooth them so the nail doesn’t scrape or irritate the skin as it grows out.

Follow up with a mini buffer block to refine any remaining roughness.

Step 6: Soften & Protect the Skin

Apply a drop of cuticle oil from your kit to soothe the skin and keep the area hydrated as the nail grows out. This helps the skin stay flexible and reduces the chance of the nail pressing back into the area.

Step 7: Continue Learning Through Video Support

Education is the secret to safe ingrown toenail relief. Every transformation I share is designed to teach you angles, pressure, and gentle techniques that protect the skin.
